Image Resolution
DPI vs PPI — What You Need for Printing
DPI (dots per inch) describes printer output. PPI (pixels per inch) describes your image resolution. They're used interchangeably for calculating print size.
DPI Guide for Different Output Types
- 300 DPI: Professional photo quality — use for prints viewed at arm's length (8×10 to 16×20)
- 240 DPI: Epson-standard photo quality — excellent for most consumer printing
- 200 DPI: Good quality — suitable for many inkjet prints and magazines
- 150 DPI: Acceptable quality — fine for larger prints viewed from a distance
- 72 DPI: Screen/web only — not suitable for printing
A 24MP camera (6000×4000) can print at approximately 20×13 inches at 300 DPI — professional quality for standard print sizes.
