How Many Megapixels Do You Need?
For most photographers, 20-24 megapixels is the sweet spot — enough for large prints, significant cropping, and manageable file sizes.
Resolution by Use Case
- Web/social media: Any camera — even smartphones are more than enough
- 8×10 print at 300 DPI: 7.2 megapixels (2400×3000 pixels)
- 16×20 print at 300 DPI: 28.8 megapixels (4800×6000 pixels)
- 24×36 print at 300 DPI: 64.8 megapixels (7200×10800 pixels)
- Billboard (viewed from 10ft+): 2-5 megapixels is sufficient
